How to Measure Your Penis Girth (Circumference)
Simple Instructions to Know How Thick Your Penis is.

You need to ‘benchmark’ how thick your penis is ‘before and after’. Therefore, you need to learn how to measure your penis girth correctly.

What You Need…
You only need one of the following:
- A soft flexible measuring tape (like you can buy at Walgreens)
- A piece of string or dental floss
- A wooden ruler, (if using string)
- A private, comfortable room
- A way to write down your measurement
Again – do NOT use a metal tape measure. It is too rigid and may give an inaccurate measurement.
Step 2: Find the Thickest Part of the Shaft
Most men should measure around the thickest part of the shaft. This is the best way to learn how thick your penis is.
For some men, that is near the base. For others, it may be closer to the middle of the shaft. The goal is to measure the area that best represents your maximum circumference.
Do not measure the head of the penis unless your doctor specifically asks you to do so. For girth enhancement planning, the shaft circumference is the more relevant measurement.
Step 3: Wrap the Measuring Tape Around the Shaft
Take the flexible measuring tape and wrap it around the shaft gently but snugly in a complete circle.
The tape should be:
- Flat against the skin
- Level all the way around
- Snug but not tight
- Not digging into the skin
- Not angled upward or downward
Read the number where the tape meets. That is your penis girth, or circumference.
Step 4: If You Do Not Have Measuring Tape, Use String
If you do not have a flexible measuring tape, use a piece of string.
Wrap the string around the thickest part of the erect shaft. Mark the point where the string meets. Then lay the string flat next to a ruler and measure the distance from the end of the string to the mark.
That number is your circumference.
Step 5: Measure More Than Once
One measurement is useful, but three measurements are better.
For accuracy, measure:
- At the same level of erection
- In a comfortable room
- Using the same method
- Without pulling the tape too tightly
If your measurements vary slightly, that is normal. You can use the average of your measurements as your baseline.
Penis girth means circumference. It is the measurement around the shaft of the penis. Many men use the word “width,” but medically, when we talk about girth, we are usually talking about circumference.

Girth vs. Width: What Is the Difference?
Girth is the circumference around the penis.
Width usually means the distance across the penis from one side to the other. Most men who search for penis width are actually looking for girth or circumference.
If you know your circumference, you can estimate diameter by dividing the circumference by 3.14.
For example, if your circumference is 5 inches:
5 ÷ 3.14 = about 1.59 inches in diameter
For medical and male enhancement discussions, circumference is usually the more useful number.
Common Measuring Mistakes
Avoid these common mistakes:
- Measuring while only partially erect
- Pulling the tape too tightly
- Measuring in a cold room
- Measuring the head instead of the shaft
- Using a rigid metal tape measure (Big – No-No!)
- Measuring at an angle
- Comparing your measurement to unreliable online claims
- Measuring repeatedly in a way that creates anxiety
The goal is not to obsess over the number. The goal is to get a reliable baseline.
Where Should I Measure: Base, Middle, or Thickest Point?
For a simple at-home measurement, I recommend measuring the thickest part of the erect shaft.
For a medical consultation, we may look at more than one area, including the base, mid-shaft, and distal shaft. This helps us understand your anatomy and plan for a more even, natural-looking girth enhancement result.
What Is Average Penis Girth?
A widely cited systematic penis girth study in BJU International looked at measurements from up to 15,521 men. In that review, the average erect circumference was 11.66 cm, or about 4.59 inches. The average flaccid circumference was 9.31 cm, or about 3.67 inches.
It is important to remember that averages are not goals. Many men fall above or below the average and are still completely normal.
Why Girth Measurement Matters
